my h.g. wells moment
I think one of the greatest, and strangest, things that can happen to you as a teacher is when you come across students who remind you of yourself… when you were in high school, and didn’t know who you were. When they reveal to you that they, in fact, don’t know who they are, and can’t wait to find out who they will become, it’s like you’ve stepped into a real time machine, and you actually have the opportunity to change the course of someone else’s history.
it feels good to decide on things… today it’s braeburn apples and jimmy fallon.
Master Boater
Today a graphic design student mocked up the layout for a “Master Boater Magazine” cover with feature articles, “How long does your Master Boater last?”, “New Rudders for the experienced Master Boater!”, and “Stroke!Stroke!Stroke! How to increase the speed of your Master Boater!”. It’s going in my memoir.

10. one day, i swear to god, you will learn how to be the same person in every situation you find yourself in. i know it sounds impossible, and you think you have to morph and change and pretend and shift in every different situation you’re in- depending on the person you’re with: but it’s not true. if you are lucky, and by lucky i mean- if you grow up, you will know who you are and be able to walk into any room and bring yourself with you- and not be scared. you will be truly developed and 100% in your skin. so, even though people and situations might bring out other sides of you, you won’t be an impostor; living in fear and feeling like a fraud. because at the core, you will be the same person and solid in every environment you enter. good luck. i love you! ”

I wonder what Proust would have made of our present-day locus of collective fantasy, the Internet. I’m guessing he would have seized on its wistful aspect, pointing out gently and with wry humor that much of what beguiles us is the act of reaching for what isn’t there. ”
